Things to know before your AFTT Audition

Here at The Academy of Film, Theatre and Television, we pride ourselves on the high level of talent of our students but also the passion and ability to grow.

Auditions are held regularly throughout the year for our Advanced Diploma of Acting for Stage and Screen and Music Theatre programs. Auditions are held to determine your level of competency, areas for growth and suitability for the chosen program.

We understand people can get nervous in the lead up to the audition. We want you to do your best, so we’ve put together some advice on preparing for your audition.

What are we looking for?

We are a looking for people who have a passion for performance. We are looking for moments that make us listen and feel your performance. We understand that you want to improve your craft, so we don’t expect complete performances. Above all we are looking for a desire and an ability to learn and want to develop your craft.

What do I need to prepare?

If applying for the Acting for Stage and Screen program, we ask you to prepare 3 monologues; one Shakespeare and two contemporary. For Music Theatre, you are to prepare one monologue of your own choice; and 2 song pieces, one upbeat and one ballad– sheet music must be provided for our pianist. You will also need to perform a piece of simple choreography, which you will be taught during the audition.

What advice can we give?

Be prepared! Read and re-read the piece. Understand your character and the context of the piece. What is it your character wants to know? What do they mean? What are they trying to say?

Dress comfortably, we don’t mean wear your PJ’s, but you don’t need to show up in a suit.

Time management is an important skill to have when it comes to studying and throughout your career. Don’t start off with a bad first impression. Make sure you are on time – or early.

Best of luck and we look forward to seeing you!
