10 money saving tips for students

We know that keeping on top of the money stuff while you're studying can sometimes be a worry, but having a great education is priceless.

Now that your studies are getting in to full swing, we've put together some great ways to help you budget, save and get $$$ during your time at AFTT.

Here are our top 10 money saving tips for students:

1. Odd Jobs

Sign up to do freelance work on sites like Upwork or AirTasker. These jobs can vary in size from small tasks like changing PDF files to word documents, writing blogs and more. You can do small tasks for $50 all the way up to major freelance jobs. Take a peek and earn some cash on the side!

2. Part-time jobs to compliment your course

Working in a café or a restaurant can help you earn some money, as well as gain vital life skills. However, it is extremely beneficial to work in an industry part-time that can help further your career. For example, video editing, wedding videography, working as an extra, theatre ushers + audience fillers.

3. Austudy + Youth Allowance

Some students MAY be eligible for Austudy or Youth Allowance.

Youth Allowance (student) is a means tested payment for full-time students and Australian Apprentices aged 16-24 years. Austudy is a means tested payment for full-time students and Australian apprentices aged 25 years and over.

Further information on eligibility and payment rates of Youth Allowance (Student) and Austudy is available on the Department of Human Services website, or by calling the Department of Human Services, Students and Trainees area, on 13 2490.

4. Tax Returns

Keep receipts for everything that you purchase for your studies. When it comes to tax time, you can speak to an accountant and find out what you may be eligible to claim back.

5. Spare Change Jar

Throw spare change in to a jar, as it adds up quickly. This also saves you just throwing away your small change on random purchases.

6. Free Fun

Find the free festivals, museums and art galleries for a nice day out. Keep an eye on sites like sydney.com, Time Out, Weekend Notes, The Urban List + Nomads World for inspo!

7. Student Discounts

Ask if somewhere does a student discount. You should always carry your student card just in case. Even online shops have options for student discounts – save every penny you can! Your tutors also have great connections and may be able to get you a discount on camera gear, equipment or software – You just have to ask ☺  Sign up to UniDays to get great discounts on tonnes of shops including ASOS, Missguided, Deliveroo, Apple Music, Hotels.com and heaps more.

8. Loyalty Cards

Take advantage of Flybuys, Woolworths Rewards, Frequent Flyer points and even your local coffee shop loyalty cards to save a buck or two!

9. Preparation

Prepare your meals so you’re not buying food on campus every day. Check your best transport route before-hand so you don’t end up catching a last-minute Uber.

10. Concession Opal Cards

Concession Opal cards will also get you much cheaper transport. Most AFTT students are eligible so make sure you ask your campus reception to get this started as soon as you can!
