We tracked down one of our Tier 3 students, Sinclair Suhood, for a chat. He tells us all about what drove him to study film and how his time at AFTT has treated him so far.
What made you want to study film?
When I saw Skyfall (2012), something clicked in my head. The Hong Kong sequence made me want to take photos. This led to film in the latter years of high school. I literally watched 2 films every day during year 12 and it was 100% worth it. I would not change a thing. I knew I had to study film during Year 12. Film is an outlet that I must explore in more detail.
How has your time been at AFTT so far?
My time at AFTT has been super fun. I didn’t really see myself being anywhere else after going to some open days at other places. The teachers and staff seemed really nice and welcoming.
Tell us some of the projects you have worked on?
We worked on a project called 'The Re-enactment'. Our group had to choose a scene from a movie to re-enact. We had to closely copy the camera shots, lighting and production design. The teacher was pretty happy with the way I shot it so I’m happy about that. I’m more interested in cinematography so I’ve been shooting a lot for my classmates. Another upcoming project are the 'Stalker' shoots. Each of us has to stalk a filmmaker and create a short film using their styles. I’m shooting a Lynch, Coen and Wan film, which I’m half excited and half nervous for.
What are you looking forward to the most during the rest of your course?
Shooting more films of course but also talking to the teachers and spending time in the gear room organising stuff.
Do you have any advice for anyone thinking about studying at AFTT?
Try to find a good group of mates to hang around. I can guarantee you they will be your crew for your film shoots at AFTT and outside of AFTT. Ask your teachers questions whenever you have them because most of them are working and are in the industry.
