One of our favourite things about living in Sydney is having access to some of the most entertaining, thought provoking and high caliber theatre productions in the country. And boy have we missed the feeling of sitting in an audience, waiting for the lights to go down and the curtain to rise.
We are so keen to get back into theatres in 2022. In saying that, we thought we would collate a list of productions (both large and small) coming to Sydney this year that we can’t wait to watch… aside from our own students productions which you can check out here.
1. At What Cost? - Belvoir St Theatre
We have to kick off this list with AFTT’S official partner, Belvoir St Theatre. At What Cost? is a new Australian drama which deals with the historical aftereffects of genocide and the question of Aboriginal Identity. With incredible reviews coming in all across Sydney, this one is a must see show which “once seen, is not easy to forget”.
2. SIX - Sydney Opera House
Playing at Sydney Opera House for the second time, Six the Musical reintroduces the six wives on Henry VIII as a sensational girl pop group, remixing and retelling their history through song. Run don’t walk… if you can get tickets.
3. Hamlet - Bell Shakespeare
You can’t think of Shakespeare without thinking of Hamlet - and Bell Shakespeare are bringing back the classic in 2022 for the third year in a row. With the company’s Artistic Director Peter Evans at the helm directing the modern adaption and reviews calling it an unmissable triumph, we are struggling to find a reason why this shouldn’t be on your watch list for 2022.
4. A Chorus Line - Darlinghurst Theatre Company
Opening in Broadway in 1975, awarded with ten Tony Awards and a Pulitzer Prize, you must have heard of this iconic musical. Now, it has made its way back to Sydney. A Chorus Line famously depicts a group of Broadway performers as they attend a grueling musical theatre audition and shows what it means to put everything on the line.
5. Blithe Spirit - Sydney Theatre Company
Described as “ghostly, glamorous and more than a little mischievous” Sydney Theatre Company’s Blithe Spirit is a camp staging of Noel Cowards wittiest play. This comedy, staring Australian drag icon Courtney Act is a guaranteed good night out.
